I saw tape 2,3 and 4. DW, VC, SG, OH and SS were blowing me away. IMO William Calhoun was the suprise act. Except for his shirt [img]wink.gif[/img] NP [img]graemlins/sleepy.gif[/img] his ride pattern sounded like building his own riser. MSS [img]eek.gif[/img] a little too much, but still a serious player.

I think Calhoun sounds arrogant in his interviews so that turned me off a lot. Plus they show him trying to play swing..while wearing gloves. [img]eek.gif[/img]

The best part of Tape 1 is the Buddy footage. There's a clip on there that really shows why Buddy is untouchable, unlike a lot of the DVD releases of the later shows where the technique is kind of diluted at that point.

absolutely steve - the buddy clip of him must have been around the 50's which imo is when he was exactly that, "untouchable" - the playing is just breathtaking. i wish there were some gigs on video from that era rather than the 80's.

its funny how important those 2 videos are to everyone - me too. thats one of the 1st drum vids i saw and was hooked with bellson who played great i thought and was, at the time, blown away with chambers. it was later that weckl and vinnie blew me away - but esp. vinnie. he really went for it.

but again, having looked at them when i was older - i sometimes thought vinnie over did it a little and gadd just shone through as a flippin master at work. except i dont care for his soloing much - after a while he does repeat himself.

but, yeah, great and timeless vids - cant wait for the dvd and i wish cathy rich would organise a a big gig with a repeat of tape one and two and then a thrid with lang, donati and minnemann!!!! THAT would be a die for gig!

I think there's an attitude that should ne considered AWA exactly "what itself is played."

All those guys have their own certain 'tood...

..but in Vinnie's playing, like on those Rivers' shows clips, there's a certain in-the-moment, seek, kill, n' destroy tood that puts it [& you] on [& over] the edge above all others. Now, that's NOT saying that i don't dig EVERY ONE of those players indiv & distinctive input. Please READ THAT LAST STATEMENT AGAIN. & AGAIN. &... [img]wink.gif[/img]

It would be great if they presently vid-INTERVIEWED the Boyz for sandwiching in on the "new" BRMSC DVD[s]...a retrospective commentary analysis of sorts! AWA putting in rehearsal or soundcheck footage or sounds, & the pics. Prob ain't gonna happen, tho. But, in my worst Beav/Butthd, "huh-huh, that would be COO-ULL."

The BRMSC2 is a virtual thrillfest for all BR, Gadd, VC, & Weck fans alike...& also Stv Arnold, regular drumr for the BRBB, who does a fine job on some of the tunes. Too bad he gets overshadowed by...but that's to be expected, i suppose. ;-)

Vinnie has such a massive rhythmic vocabulary that when watching him play, the anticipation of what he might do, even if he doesn't do it, adds a lot of edge to his playing.
